How can I go faster on a cycle?

A couple of years ago, I decided to start biking to work. For someone who sits on a chair, in front of the computer all day, this was a great way to get regular exercise, remain outdoors longer and not have to take the RTD every day.

So, I went ahead and bought a Trek 7.6FX. I wanted a bike where I  wouldn’t want to care if I jumped it off the curb, or ran into some dirt. This one does the job extremely well. I rode to work 2 or 3 times a week, 7 miles one way, and I absolutely love every moment of that.

So, next I decide that I wanted to ride more and started riding out on weekends and do 20 to 30 mile loops around boulder and the northern foothills. Going on rides out with friends was even more enjoyable. But, I noticed right away that I was substantially slower than most other cyclists (all of whom had real road bikes).

My first thought, was that this was because I was weak and slow. But, I had been biking fairly regularly and I was starting to wonder about how much of this was me. Other people said that my bike was heavy or had greater rolling resistance. Then, one day I decided to test ride a friend’s mid-range road bike and I couldn’t believe how much quicker I was riding a plain old road bike rather than my hybrid.

The road bike is optimized for speed. The hybrid isn’t. The drive chain, the wheels have lower frictional losses. The frame is lighter in weight and that’s just when comparing bikes at similar price-points. As you explore lighter and more efficient components, things just keep looking faster.

Does that mean, you need a road bike? How much does one need to spend on lighter bike components? How much should you spend on a road bike? $500, $1000, $2000 or $5000  or even more ? Also, do you need a custom bike frame, does it need to have any carbon fiber?

On the other hand,  what sort of training is required for sprints? What about triathlons? What if I am training for Le Tour De France? How many hours of training is needed? What other fitness training is needed?

These are all questions which fall under the umbrella of, “How can I go faster?”.  This is exactly what inrogperf is designed to answer.
